THIS WEEK: JOURNAL ARTICLE SHARING
Students will be standing up in class this week (October 20-22) to share important information from the journal article they've been working with since the start of the school year. It should take students approximately 2 minutes to describe the purpose, procedure, results, and applications of their study in a way that is meaningful and memorable for their classmates.
I am not allowing students to use note cards or visual aids for this mini-presentation. This is to simulate what they would have done if they had to speak "off the cuff" to a Science Fair judge about a study they had conducted themselves.
Later in the year, I'll have students present information digitally using Schoology and other technology tools. For now, I think there's tremendous value in gaining experience - and confidence! - with standing up in front of a group of peers and speaking about science concepts.
We've practiced speaking to each other in pairs over the past couple of weeks. I hope your child has also "rehearsed" with you at home. I expect their share out to be polished and informative. They will be graded on both content (12 points) and delivery (8 points) using the rubric I posted on Schoology last week and will review with them in class today (10/19).
1ST MARKING PERIOD DEADLINE: OCTOBER 28
I have been allowing students to improve and resubmit ALL assignments throughout the first marking period, especially when it comes to the Journal Article Project. Any missing work, make-up work, test retakes, or journal resubmissions are due to me by Wednesday, October 28, so that I can finalize 1st Marking Period grades. This is the final day for me to accept work and still have time to grade it; please encourage your child NOT to wait until the last minute!
We won't be doing anything new - or for homework - this week, as we present our journal articles during class. This week is a great week to get caught up and bring grades up before the 1st marking period of freshman year ends!
ACT: NOW THROUGH NOVEMBER 5
One of my extracurricular responsibilities is assisting Mr. Fillmore in coaching the junior girls' PowderPuff team. Our practices are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 3:30 at the middle school. For that reason, I will be sticking to the normal Academic Coaching Time period (2:35 until 3:10 p.m.) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays this week, next week, and November 3, 4, and 5. Mondays are always off limits, as we use those days for collaborative team meetings, department meetings, and faculty meetings. Students are still welcome to stay as late as they want with me on Fridays, as I am always here until at least 4:30 p.m.
