Greetings, Parents!
My name is Meghan Hooper, and I am so happy to be your child's 9th grade science teacher. I hope you and your child are as excited as I am about the start of a new school year and, for them, the start of high school!
I plan to use this Mrs. Hooper Memo site as a way to communicate with you about what is going on in our Foundations of Science class. I certainly don't promise daily or even weekly posts. After all, if I'm blogging, that means I'm not planning or grading or attending events at Ephrata High School!
This site is just one of the many ways I can let you know what we're studying in class, when test dates or project deadlines are approaching, or where your child can find the resources he or she needs to be successful in my class.
As you and your child finish up your back-to-school shopping, I wanted you to be aware of the materials your child will need for Foundations of Science.
Your child will need the following materials EVERY DAY (beginning on Monday, August 31st):
I will be providing a textbook (of course) as well as a notebook that I call their Journal. Your child soon will see what a vital role Journals play in my class. Journals are kept in my classroom and will be used daily to record essential questions, answer DoNow prompts, complete class activities, and summarize learning. Your child will get his or her journal on the first day of class!
Your child also will receive a Course Policy packet on the first day of school. I am sure it will be one of many papers that he or she brings home for you to "read" and sign. Do not be overwhelmed, but please do review these important documents with your child!
The students and I will be going over all of our course policy information in class during the first week of school. I also plan to review goals, expectations, technology use, grading codes in the Community Portal, study ideas, and more about our course work here in future issues of the Mrs. Hooper Memo.
If at any point you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Email ([email protected]) is the best way to get in touch with me during the school day. You are also welcome to leave me a voicemail by calling my classroom (717-721-1478 ext. 19200).
Here's to a great year!

Your child will need the following materials EVERY DAY (beginning on Monday, August 31st):
- A 3 ring binder (minimum 1" rings) to store notes sheets and handouts for my class. Everything I give them will be hole-punched for this purpose. I know that some students prefer to carry one giant binder with sections for different classes. I am okay with this as long as the giant binder is neat and organized - and present in class every single day.
- A scientific calculator capable of using scientific notation and exponents. (Look for a ^ button and the symbols sin, cos, and tan.) A basic Texas Instruments scientific calculator can be purchased at Wal-Mart for less than $15. I recommend waiting to see what your child needs or is given in his or her math class before you purchase anything! Please note: while many cell phones have scientific calculators, these may not be used during class or on tests.
- A pencil to use for lab data and mathematical problem-solving activities. Notes may be taken in pen, but any numbers must be recorded in pencil so that they can be erased if mistakes are made.
